Explore Mount Ruapehu on foot during summer (December to April, weather dependent)

When the snow melts on Mount Ruapehu, Whakapapa Ski Area transforms into a dramatic alpine walking destination. During the summer months, a network of well-marked short walks allows visitors to explore ancient lava flows, volcanic ridgelines and panoramic viewpoints.

These walks are ideal for guests staying at Skotel Alpine Resort, the closest accommodation to the Whakapapa Ski Field and Sky Waka gondola.

Skyline Trail

Time: Allow 1.5–2.5 hours return
Distance: 2.5km (return)
Track start: Top of the Sky Waka gondola

Widely regarded as one of the best short walks in Tongariro National Park, the Skyline Trail climbs from the top of the Sky Waka gondola (2,020m) to Skyline Ridge at 2,300m. The reward is expansive alpine views across Mt Ngauruhoe, Lake Taupō and the Central Plateau.

This walk is well formed but exposed, making it best suited to settled weather days.

Waterfall Descent Trail

Time: Allow 1–2 hours (descent)
Distance: 2.5km
Track start: Top of the Sky Waka gondola

Descending from the Sky Waka top station, this trail follows the path carved by ancient lava flows and lahars. Along the way you’ll pass striking waterfalls, rugged volcanic terrain and enjoy wide-open views across the Central Plateau. The track finishes at the Sky Waka base area.

Meads Wall Trail

Time: Approximately 20 minutes return
Track start: Bottom of the Rangatira Chairlift, Whakapapa Ski Field

Ideal if you’re short on time or visiting for a specific highlight, the Meads Wall Trail is a short and easy walk to one of Whakapapa’s most striking rock formations. The track itself is brief and straightforward, leading directly to Meads Wall, a well-known Lord of the Rings filming location.

It’s at Meads Wall that the views really open up, with dramatic alpine scenery and expansive outlooks across the surrounding landscape making the destination well worth the short walk.

Wild West Trail

Time: Allow 2–2.5 hours return
Distance: 2.7km
Track start: Top of the Sky Waka gondola

Heading west from the Sky Waka, this trail winds downhill through open alpine terrain with views of Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe, and Mt Taranaki, on clear days. The walk finishes at the Sky Waka base area.

Yankee Trail

Time: Allow 1.5 hours (descent)
Distance: 2.7km
Track start: Top of the Sky Waka gondola

From the western side of the ski area, the Yankee Trail descends through open lava and scoria fields. Follow trail markers past Delta Corner before connecting with the Waterfall Descent Trail for the final section back to base, all with uninterrupted views of Mt Ruapehu’s western flanks.

Knoll Loop Trail

Time: Allow 1 hour 45 minutes
Distance: 2km (return)
Track start: Top of the Sky Waka gondola

This varied loop follows the Skyline Trail partway before turning west at a marked intersection. The track then makes a steady climbing traverse across lava sheets polished smooth by glacial action over the past 20,000 years. From the top of Knoll Ridge, the route descends to Knoll Ridge Chalet, offering a fascinating mix of geology and alpine scenery.

Planning for Your Whakapapa Summer Short Walk

As with all alpine environments, preparation is essential. Wear sturdy footwear, dress for changing conditions, carry plenty of water and sunscreen, and let someone know your plans. We also recommend checking out plan your trip and checking the conditions of the mountain and status of the walks before going. The Sky Waka gondola may close in inclement weather conditions.
