Whakapapa is New Zealand’s largest ski area and boasts the country’s premier beginner facility as well as vast areas of intermediate and advanced ski terrain. Explore 550ha of some of the most amazing natural terrain in the country with wide groomed trails, huge snow filled basins, steep chutes and secret powder stashes. Whakapapa boasts ski New Zealand’s longest season (early June – late October) and even has night skiing available during the season (Friday and Saturday nights).

Whakapapa’s Happy Valley is the place to learn to ski or snowboard. With its own cafe, rental outlet, 5 lifts plus a ski and ride school, it’s like a mini ski area just for beginners. The gentle slope has easy-to-use covered carpet lifts and a slow-moving chairlift for quick progression.

When you graduate from Happy Valley you get to play in the vast playground of the intermediate and advanced slopes made all the more exciting by the natural volcanic terrain. Explore this wonderland with everything from cruisy groomed runs to exhilarating chutes, bumps and drops.

New to Whakapapa Ski Area in June 2019, is New Zealand’s largest gondola, Sky Waka. The $25 million gondola will travel 1.8 km’s through one of the North Island’s most rugged and spectacular landscapes past waterfalls and snow-laden peaks.

Ride Sky Waka to the award-winning Knoll Ridge Chalet any time of year. At 2,020m above sea level it boasts New Zealand’s highest restaurant and café with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the pinnacles providing spectacular views.

Skotel Alpine Resort displays a mountain conditions report every morning during the ski season at 7.00am outside reception. The report is updated throughout the day as conditions change.

Whakapapa Ski Area is located at the top of Bruce Road, Whakapapa Village. There are several carparks to be found at the top of the road. Typically the earlier you arrive the closer you will be able to park to the top of Bruce Road.
