The longest navigable river in New Zealand, the Whanganui River traverses over 200km of countryside in its winding journey through the Whanganui National Park to eventually meet the Tasman sea.
The river has spectacular scenery in its middle reaches, north of Pipiriki, where it passes through a series of narrow gorges set amidst lush native forest.
