Located in the heart of Tongariro National Park on the edge of Mt. Ruapehu, Skotel Alpine Resort offers an excellent base to discover the rivers and lakes in the region for summertime adventure. There are countless streams, rivers, basins and lakes surrounding the resort.

Taranaki Falls & Tama Lakes
Within the immediate area of Whakapapa Village there are a series of short walks that will take you to Taranaki Falls, Silica Rapids and Tama Lakes, consisting of the lower and upper Tama Lakes. The two spectacular blue lakes are old volcano craters and are situated between Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngaruahoe.
The astounding Taranaki Falls are listed as one of the must see waterfalls in New Zealand and is accompanied by unforgettable views of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro, and a fantastic walk through the beech forest.
Tama Lakes Track and several other trails, start from a well-marked trailhead slightly north of the Whakapapa Visitor Centre in the village.
Lake Rotopaunamu fills a crater nestled into the western side of Mount Phanga with Long Beach sweeping along the eastern side of the lake that is an ideal spot for a picnic or rest stop. The track into the lake commences 11 kilometres from Turangi (a 25 minute drive from Skotel).
These falls are easily accessible from Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre. Towhi Falls tumble over the edge of an ancient lava flow and are reached after a short stroll through mountain toatoa and beech forest.
If you fancy some high adrenaline charged water sports or a spot of wilderness fishing then the Whanganui River offers a number of options. You can select from white water rafting, raft fishing and jet boating in the river. For more information check out Whanganui River Adventures.
The Whanganui River is the longest navigable river in New Zealand, traversing over 200km of countryside in its winding journey through the Whanganui National Park to eventually meet the Tasman sea. Pipriki and the Whanganui River is 76 kilometres drive from Whakapapa Village and will take you around an hour and 10 minutes to get there.
The Tongariro River is one of New Zealand’s most famous rivers and is popular for trout fishing and whitewater rafting. The turbulent waters provide fun-filled and exhilarating river rapids on a whitewater rafting adventure to suit your degree of courage and ability.
