Take a day trip to the biggest lake in Australasia. Lake Taupo is actually an immense volcanic caldera and is one of the world’s most formidable and active super-volcanoes.
Lake Taupo is world renowned for its trout fishing with an abundance of brown and rainbow trout available in the waters all year round. But it is also popular for all manner of water activities such as kayaking, canoeing, kite surfing, water skiing, sailing or boating.
For the adrenalin junkies there is excitement plus with skydiving, bungy jumping, white water rafting, jet boating and mountain biking all available.
Nearby Huka Falls are new Zealand’s best known falls with water gushing over an 11 metre high waterfall on the Waikato River. There is a bridge crossing the river with a number of viewing points. Or see the falls aboard a jet boat or river cruise to the base of the falls.
The area surrounding Lake Taupo is rich with hot thermal pools and springs. To enjoy these you can bath in them at AC Baths in Taupo, at the hot spring at Otumuheke Stream or the cascading silica and thermal pools at Wairakei Terraces.
For the more sedate a visit to the local Taupo Museum is worthwhile for a history of Taupo and Maori culture. Also worth visiting is the Lava Glass Studio and Garden in Wairakei. Afterwards finish your day off by tasting some local craft beers at the Crafty Trout Brewing Co in Lake Taupo.
Explore the lake on foot or by bicycle on one the Great Lake Trail as it winds through the lake surrounds and into native forest.
The Aratiatia Rapids, 12 kilometres from Taupo are one of the Waikato River’s most outstanding scenic spots. There is a 4 hour return walking track to the rapids from Huka Falls or you can also witness them via a jet boat.
The Taupo town centre has a wonderful relaxed lakeside holiday vibe with boutique shops, galleries and great places to eat. Head to one of the cafes on the lake for a bite to eat or take a picnic and enjoy the magical views.
