Book your accommodation for Waitangi Day public holiday at Skotel Alpine Resort and enjoy the comfort and facilities of New Zealand’s highest hotel.

Waitangi Day celebrates the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 and is considered as the national day of New Zealand. The Māori celebrate Waitangi Day in a variety of different ways. Both Māori and Pakeha dignitaries give speeches to the public and the Māori take part in a ceremonial war canoe tradition.

Māori traditions are observed on Waitangi Day and can include a sampling of Māori food, waka building, weaving or watching kapa-haka – a traditional performance of the Māori. Also, people fly kites all over the country. Other celebrations include picnics, music, storytelling and all forms of entertainment. Other events that can occur on this day include rodeos, folk music festivals and even sporting events.

The Waitangi Day public holiday is the ideal time to stay a few days extra at Skotel Alpine Resort and incorporate the weekend either before or after the national day.

Skotel Alpine Resort is located in the heart of the North Island within the Tongariro National Park, only a 3 hour drive from Hamilton Airport, 4.5 hours from the Auckland and Wellington Airports. The hotel is the ideal base for exploring the UNESCO world heritage park – and the many hiking and biking trails in the area. BOOK NOW
